Inclusive Growth in Cities: Global Lessons for Local Action

The University of Manchester, UK

Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th November 2019

This interdisciplinary conference responds to the need to find new solutions to social and spatial inequalities in the face of increasing social divisions, rising populism and the rising welfare costs of unequal societies.

The first major academic conference on inclusive growth in the UK, it will bring together UK and international scholars from disciplines as diverse as economics, geography, social policy, politics, sociology and urban planning, with policy-makers, practitioners and thought leaders, focussing on what can be learned for action at the city region scale.

Keynote speakers will include:

Sir Bob Kerslake, Chair of the UK 2070 Commission

Torsten Bell, Chief Executive of the Resolution Foundation

Professor Theresa Córdova, Director of the Great Cities Institute at University of Illinois, Chicago

Professor Chris Benner, Director of the Everett Program for Technology and Social Change at University of California, Santa Cruz

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester

The first day of the conference (Tuesday 19th November) will take a traditional form. It will include keynote addresses and the presentation of papers for which abstracts have been submitted. Day one will conclude with the optional conference dinner and drinks.

The second day of the conference (Wednesday 20th November) will feature keynote speeches, study visits within the city-region of Greater Manchester (e.g. to major development projects, employers, employment and skills programmes and neighbourhood initiatives) followed by interdisciplinary workshops.
